ABOUT S2C

Understanding the difference between speech & language is a key factor in understanding the concept of Spelling to Communicate!

Language is the cognitive ability to learn and use words in a structured format for communication. Speech is the physical motor ability to convey that acquired language through verbal articulation.

Language & Speech

Language and speech are controlled in different areas of the brain. Two areas in the frontal lobe of the brain are responsible for language comprehension and the forming of sentences before one speaks.

The motor cortex is the area of the brain responsible for the planning and execution of muscle movements, including those needed for speech (the mouth, lips, tongue, and vocal chords).  When you want to say something out loud, the motor cortex formulates a plan to make that happen.

What is the Motor?

Non-speakers have issues formulating the motor plan required to execute speech.  This is referred to as the "brain-body disconnect."  Non-speakers can formulate thoughts, words, and sentences in their brain,  but this "disconnect" stops them from being bale to verbalize it all.

Non-Speakers

The Spelling to Communicate (S2C) method brings together the cognitive abilities with the motor skills necessary to point to letters on a letterboard. Working with certified S2C practitioners, over time Spellers will continue to improve their motor control, allowing them to communicate their thoughts and utilize their intelligence.
